Science Erodes Tradition
Scientific thought is a powerful force in our lives today. As scientific thought spreads, in every country and culture, the customs, habits, and ideas that our ancestors built up over a long period of time gradually disappear, while so-called ‘scientific’ customs and ideas spread.
Scientific thinking creates new technologies one after another, and as time goes by, we are forced to adapt to these new technologies and ways of thinking.
The resources we humans have are always finite or limited. The resources referred to here do not mean those obtained from the natural environment, such as petroleum. They are resources that we all have when we think of human beings as individuals.
The most obvious resource is TIME. In the solar calendar, there are 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year. This is the resource that we all have in the most equal form.
The other resource is the resource tied to our own physical body. Our physical abilities, our ability to think, our mental toughness, and so on. We could call this ‘PERSONALITY’. However, it cannot be said that ‘Personality’ is possessed equally. Each of us is influenced by our blood (heredity), and we are also influenced by our family, social environment, and other factors that influence and transform us after we are born.
‘Time‘ and ‘Personality‘ are resources with completely different directions, but both are finite or limited. ‘Time‘ has the limitation of being lost moment by moment, and ‘Personality’ can trigger the creation of ‘what one can do’ and ‘what one cannot do (=limitation)’ as a human being.
As long as the resources we have, such as Time and Personality, are finite, we need to think about how to use those resources. That is why, in the face of a scientific worldview where new technologies and methodologies are constantly being created, we cannot help but think about how to use the resources we have as individuals to adapt to the new things that are being created.
Therefore, in the scientific worldview, we are generally forced to abandon the inheritance of methodologies and ways of thinking that our predecessors have carefully maintained. We are forced to use our resources(Time and Personality) for the ‘new things’ that are being created one after another, repeatedly.
